Short talks. Focused themes. Timely conversations.

As decisions about Sussex’s future move closer to home, these one-hour online sessions offer a space for practical insight, challenge and exchange.

Each event explores a key theme – from digital strategy and manufacturing to land use and culture – shaped in advance by the questions that matter most to the people attending.

Who is it for?
This series is for anyone who wants to better understand how devolution will affect their sector, place or organisation.

Whether you lead a business, work in the public or voluntary sector, study in the region, or simply want to engage in local change - you’re very welcome.

Why take part?
This isn’t a panel discussion or a policy lecture. It’s a fast-paced, insight-led format shaped by audience input.

Guest speakers will respond directly to your questions through short insights, with opportunities to ask more and share your views on what needs to happen next.

What to expect:
  • A 60-minute online session
  • Scene-setting and update on devolution processes at the start
  • Questions sent in by the audience, debated by an room of experts
  • Quick-fire Q&A

Potential topic areas:

1. Planning system, policy alignment and governance
  • How would the planning system change?
  • Will there still be specific teams to cover each area?
  • At the moment all of the local planning authorities have the same core policies but also district policies – will there be an amalgamation of policies?
2. Environmental sustainability, resilience and nature recovery
  • How will a united Sussex deliver a greener, climate resilient Sussex that is not overwhelmed by inappropriate development over the next 30 years?
  • How do we develop an integrated response to the climate and nature emergencies?
  • Can we create a connected strategy for nature recovery, particularly using the Sussex Bay model?
  • What would a region-wide response to nature recovery look like, and who leads it?
  • How can we build more resilient communities in the face of environmental change?
  • How can housing development be both creative and environmentally sustainable (retrofits, green builds)?
3. Balancing economic growth, community needs and the environment
  • How do the economic interests of small rural and suburban communities not become overwhelmed by regional and city interests?
  • How do we balance local economic growth with environmental protection (e.g. water quality, pollution)?
  • How should we manage the over-commercialisation of public space, particularly in urban centres?
  • What transport systems do we need to enable access to natural assets and rural workspaces?
  • How can the seasonal nature of employment in Sussex be addressed through environmental and tourism strategies?
Your questions and feedback will help identify where the strongest interest lies, inform future sessions, and support plans for in-person events later in the project.
